The Art of Layering

Winter weather is not created equal, but one thing’s for sure, looking good is just as important as feeling warm. Getting dressed during the colder months is tricky. It’s more to it than just throwing on a cute dress and calling it a day, you have to consider your look, and of course, how to stay warm at the same time.

No matter what weight, size or body shape you are, no-one wants to look larger than their actual size, which is why some women shy away from layering. However, we are here to provide you with some quick rules to master the art of smart layering.

  1. Color is Key
Layering is best achieved when you keep your look to one- or two-color families. Wearing one color in different shades will automatically elongate your frame while tricking the eye into believing you’re not wearing multiple layers. If you want a little more pizzazz, opt for a print but keep it to one bold print and everything else minimal and neutral. Pairing colors like orange and camel complement each other nicely, other great color combos for the season include burgundy and green, navy and mustard, black and tan.
  2. Don’t Ditch Your Dresses
Summer dresses can be worn all season long, it’s all about how you layer your look. Your warm-weather staples can instantly become cold-weather appropriate when you put them together properly. Remember that favorite slip dress from last summer? Pop a turtleneck and pair jeans for a chic and feminine look. Take that sleeveless mid-to-floor-length dress and add a silk button-down underneath it to make it look like a jumper. Another great trick is layering a skirt with some leggings or leather shorts with sweater tights, it can be a cool way to mix up fabric textures and weight into your winter wardrobe.
  3. Play with Proportion and Length
Proportion is everything when it comes to layering. Think trousers or jeans with ankle booties. Incorporating pants that are just the right length pairs perfect because it hits right above the ankle and creates a seamless look that elongates. Keeping the booties and the denim or trousers incomparable colors aid in creating a slimmer silhouette.  Add subtle touches like rolling up the sleeve of a coat and cuffing a shirt over with a tiny bit of the shirt pattern showing. It doesn’t have to be perfect, sometimes a little messy and undone looks effortless. Aim to elongate is the focus! Creating the illusion of looking taller will stretch your silhouette. So, throw on your heels with a long cardigan, and you’re good to go. Another option is to add a shirt dress with a cropped jacket, then slip on a calf-length coat with knee boots. The possibilities are endless, and they look chic with dresses, jeans, leggings, etc.
  4. Have Fun with It
Mastering the art of layering takes time and practice. We play around with different layered looks all the time until we find something that works. There’s really no end to the number of combinations you can create and it’s an awesome way to get excited about your wardrobe and take risks!
